GRACE ACADEMY

Grace Academy helps me deal with my present life. I feel alive at Grace, able to express myself with fellow artists. My art makes me believe there are no limits and Grace is like my artistic haven. - Sam P., student of Grace Academy

A Message From the Grace Institute Board of Directors:

Grace Academy proved to be a stunningly successful program whose triumphs are beautifully documented on this page. Regretfully, we are currently unable to sustain Grace Academy as we have known it, and have placed it on haitus.

“CONFLUENCE OF UNTOLD STORIES & UNSUNG HEROES”

The Confluence Project and Grace Academy 2005-2006 Grace Academy was one of 17 Washington and Oregon schools that was selected to participate in the 2005/2006 Confluence Project in the Schools initiative. With our $5,000 grant from the Confluence Project, and the same assignment given to Maya Lin, we will also create interpretive artworks that explore the past, present and future perspectives of Lewis and Clark and Native Americans about the
Columbia River and Pacific Northwest. Through the arts, we will begin to explore the “facts” and stories of our diverse American history and the multiple narratives that have woven our culture. After studying about the lesser known stories and heroes of the Corps of Discovery, we will focus our attention on the neighborhood of Grace Academy, Sullivan’s Gulch. Our goal is to complete our own “Corps of Discovery” by exploring the history of our community: discovering how the environment has changed in the last 200 years and researching the “untold stories” and “unsung heroes” of our community. We integrated history, interviews and art by creating:

  • Designs for a 8ft.x24ft. mural that will depict the changes of the environment in the last 200 years and highlight the lesser known heroes/heroines and stories of the Lewis and Clark expedition and those of Sullivan’s Gulch.
  • Research, drawings, mosaics, fused glass, theater pieces, writing, and footage for a book and video that will honor the stories and the process of this project!

About Grace Academy

Founded in 2002 through a generous grant from the Legacy Health System Community Health Fund, Grace Academy offers creative-education to underserved, culturally diverse, middle school youth during high-risk hours.

Guided by the National benchmarks and the benchmarks of the Oregon Department of Education, the rich curriculum is grounded in art and academics, self-discovery and expression, as well as community- building experiences.

Grace Academy is led by an exceptional staff of professional artists, educators, and art therapists, who are joined by over 15 guest artists and volunteers each school year.

Creative-education inspires students to learn the necessary skills of creativity, problem solving and the tools of artistic communication that provide them with the ability to both see themselves and to be seen as successful.

  • Student’s work has been featured in Portland’s Pearl District galleries, in community newspapers, and in shows at the Stairwell Gallery.

  • The strong curriculum in both the visual and performing arts culminates twice a year in an Open House and Awards Ceremony.

  • The 4:1 student to staff ratio results in high expectations and high achievement.
